Scholarship Applications Awarded

 

The Greater Tuckahoe Area Merchants’ Association presented scholarship awards to 21 students from the Greater Tuckahoe area at the monthly Association meeting on July 13, 2016 at L’s Restaurant in Corbin City.

Three graduating high school seniors received notice of awards from the James and Martha Owens scholarship fund.  The Owen’s established the scholarship fund about 19 years ago to recognize high school seniors from the Tuckahoe area who were continuing their education. This year’s recipients are Jennifer Beebe, Aylssa Bellucci, and Elena Bonner.  Each will receive $250, $500 or $750 at the end of the first semester, depending on volunteering services, essay content and financial need.

In its fifth year, a scholarship program was established in memory of Alex and Virginia May for a high school senior and/or a student already attending an area Community college.  This year’s recipient of $500 is Ambrosia Gibboney, payable at the end of the first semester.

A scholarship was established from the estate of local resident Doris C. Stowell.  A $3200 award is, to be given to a high school senior from the Greater Tuckahoe Area who meets specific criterion and is continuing their education.  The award will be given to Stephen Palmer at the end of his first year of college.

Additionally, the Greater Tuckahoe Area Merchants’ Association created a scholarship program for students who are already enrolled in college.   The sixteen recipients for this scholarship program are, Kevin Birk,  Roland Bonner, Jennifer Campbell,  Ashley Carter, Edward Carter, Ashley Conrad, Kyle Conrad, Fiona Devine, William Eisele, Emily Grant, Elyse Huber, Jason Kaufmann, Joe Kaufmann, Avery Simpson, Ashley Surran, and Devon Terwilliger.   Each is receiving $750, $500 or $250 depending on several criterion including financial need, GPA and the level that they volunteered at our events.

A total of $12,450 is being awarded this year.
 
Proceeds from the, the Greater Tuckahoe Area Merchant's Association Canoe and Kayak Race, Paddle Board and Poker Run, “Snow Ball” dance, June Bug Fun(d) Raiser and The Craft Show were the primary funding sources plus the bequests from the Martha and James Owens and Doris C. Stowell estates and from the May family.

As a final note – with the payment of the $12,450 to the students listed above, the Greater Tuckahoe Area Merchants’ Association has provided approximately $170,000 to enhance the educational opportunities of our students. Since 2008 funds have provided to 95 students.
